Captioned Video Accommodation (CVA)

The accommodation requires that any audio or video content be properly captioned to make your course accessible to Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. This may include:

  • Any 3rd party video such as You Tube, Vimeo, etc., or audio clips or podcasts shared in Webcourses or during a face-to-face presentation
  • Any recordings of classes or lectures, including live-streamed lectures, that are shared in Webcourses or during a face-to-face presentation
  • An e-text book that may have links to audio or video content*
  • Narrated PowerPoint presentations
  • Any audio or video content embedded in PowerPoint presentations, pdf, or Word documents

*Content provided by an outside vendor should be captioned at the source and is the responsibility of the publisher.

What are Proper Captions?

Your Role as the Professor

If a student enrolled in your course has activated the Captioned Video Accommodation, the CVA teams at SAS and CDL will assist you with making your audio and video content accessible. First, you will need to complete the Checklist for Digital Accessibility (Form D) as soon as possible so that a review of your course for accessibility can commence. This link can also be found in the Course Accessibility Letter.

You can assist us by:

  • Selecting properly captioned video for your course whenever possible,
  • Making sure to turn on captions if you are showing recorded content in your classroom presentation,
  • Alerting us to any additional audio or video content you will be adding to your course throughout the semester.

Here are a few helpful tips if you are recording your lectures:

  • Wear a microphone so your voice will be picked up by your computer even if you walk away from it.
  • Repeat student questions and answers as they are often too far away from the microphone to have their voices recorded.
  • If you are recording to the UCF Zoom cloud, you may want to consider a Zoom/Panopto integration. It’s the fastest and easiest way to get proper captions returned to your lectures. Contact DHHServices@ucf.edu for more information.
